In addition, I cannot install GPG. Any suggestions for solving this problem?

This worked great, except that my Bundles don’t work anymore, such as GrowlMail. In addition to the Mail folder I have a "Mail Downloads" folder which I'd also like to encrypt. What is the relationship between the Mail program and these two folders? Can I simply follow the same process in your tutorial and end up with a "Mail" alias and a "Mail Downloads" alias in my Library? Will that protect the downloads? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this tutorial. I’m using Mail under Snow Leopard. I would suggest changing
"Select 256-bit encryption and read/write for the format"
to:
"Select 256-bit encryption and sparse bundle disk image for the format"
Here's why:
"Instead of a monolithic file, a sparse bundle is a bundle (directory) that stores the disk image as banded data files. When the content of the image changes, one or more band files is changed, created, or deleted. This allows backup software (such as Time Machine) to operate more efficiently."
